"The ruling (of MUI) is a religious ruling, always for oneself, so its legal enforcement is (in the forms of) sin and hell, not sweep," Kalla said.Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice President M Jusuf Kalla has said that an edict of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) is not a law so there is no obligation to enforce it.
"The ruling (of MUI) is a religious ruling, always for oneself, so its legal enforcement is (in the forms of) sin and hell, not sweep," Kalla said at the Vice Presidential Palace here on Tuesday.
He made the statement in reference to a Muslim mass organization, whose activists went around and tried to enforce an MUI edict asking Muslims not to wear Christmas attributes.
"No, it cant, a mass organization cannot do that. Its the function of police," Kalla said about the sweep.
MUIs edict does not even bind Muslims, because it concerns an individual and God, he said.
"If someone violates it, meaning he or she violates the religious ruling, and the punishment is sin and hell," he remarked.
Therefore, he ordered police to take action against such activities by mass organizations.(*)
