Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has called on the state to effectively protect consumers, including through legal enforcement and supervision.

"What do we need to pay attention to? We must focus on consumer protection, and this is closely related to the steps taken by the state to protect consumers effectively," the president stated while chairing a limited cabinet meeting on consumer protection at the Presidential Office here, Tuesday.

Supervision and legal enforcement must be effective, Jokowi noted, adding that with the assistance of producers, the norms and standards must be met.

However, Jokowi highlighted that the level of compliance by producers to meet the requirements, outlined in the Indonesian National Standards (NSI), is still quite low.

Only 42 percent of the products circulating in the markets meet the NSI requirements, he pointed out.

"This means there is something wrong, and it must be fixed," he emphasized.

He called on consumer protection institutions to work harder to protect the consumers.

"Hence, their presence in the community could be felt," he remarked.

According to data, only 22.2 percent of the consumers are aware of the functions of consumer protection institutions.
