What is important is that Earth Hour is a call on people to save energy."Pontianak (ANTARA News) - Equator city Pontianak in West Kalimantan province will join the energy saving campaign movement Earth Hour, initiated by the World Wildlife Fund, once again.
The city, which is located on the equator, will mark the activity along with 37 cities across the country at the Taman Alun Kapuas square on Saturday, Pontianak Earth Hour City Coordinator Windy Chintia said here on Friday.
Globally, the energy saving campaign movement has already entered its 10th anniversary following the first launch in 2007 in Sydney, Australia.
Various events have already been held in Pontianak, which is the provinces capital, to meet the Earth Hour commemoration ranging from campaigning in schools, planting trees to distributing shopping bags, cleaning sewages and media visits.
Windy said the next event would be the sixth in the city, with the main focus being put on a school campaign and garbage issues.
"The activity is also aimed at supporting the government to realize its garbage-free Pontianak target by 2020," she said.
Windy further added that the activity would also be highlighted by the #Reuseable Bag Action to campaign for the use of resizable shopping bags.
"This will be the start of the campaign on reducing the use of plastic bags to reduce garbage," she said.
Windy noted that the Pontianak Earth Hour activity is part of a global movement. In every campaign on climate change the public has always been urged to follow a green lifestyle by saving energy, water, plastic bags, paper and buying products produced from sustainably managed sources.
"What is important is that Earth Hour is a call on people to save energy. To mark it, lights will be turned off for an hour," Windi said.
