Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Chilean President Veronica Michelle Bachelet Jeria is on a two-day state visit to Indonesia until Friday (May 12), according to the Foreign Ministry.

During his stay, the Chilean leader will hold bilateral talks with President Joko Widodo to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral ties, the ministry said in a press statement released, Thursday.

The two leaders will focus on enhancing cooperation in the economic and trade sector and the maritime and fisheries sector, including social and cultural cooperation, the statement read.

The Chilean presidents visit is of great significance and is in line with the Indonesian governments priorities to expand the market for its products in South America, the ministry said.

While in Indonesia, President Bachelet will also attend a seminar held by the chambers of commerce and industry in the two countries.

He will also visit the ASEAN Secretariat in South Jakarta and lay a wreath at the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in South Jakarta.

Chile is Indonesias third largest trade partner in South America. In 2016, trade between Chile and Indonesia reached US$227 million, with Indonesia enjoying a surplus of US$60.5 million.

The two countries are in the process of negotiating a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which is expected to increase trade and investment between the two countries. (*)
