"It is not for rivalling KPK but we will synergize with KPK," head of public relations division Inspector General Setyo Wasisto said.Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian police plan to set up an anti-corruption unit so that a number of corruption cases could be handled more quickly.
"The police chief raises the idea of an anti-corruption special unit, " head of public relations division Inspector General Setyo Wasisto at the National Police Headquarters here on Wednesday.
He said with the presence of an anti-corruption unit it is hoped process of corruption cases could be carried out faster in cooperation with the prosecutors office.
This will be different from the handling so far when a case is carried out by the crime investigation department. It will take time as it has to be handed over first to the prosecutors office when its investigation by the police is finished where it will then be processed by the prosecutors office before it is brought to the court.
"Later when the special unit is established, process will be faster as the prosecutors office will also conduct supervision during investigation by the police," he said.
He said when the unit is already established the Directorate of Corruption Crime Investigation will be wioed out from the National Police Crime Investigation Department.
Regarding the impression that the unit will rival KPK (Corruption Eradication Commission) he assured that it would not happen.
"It is not for rivalling KPK but we will synergize with KPK. It means we will involve KPK as a narometer. What is being processed by the police will later be submitted to KPK. Corruption is an extraordinary crime and therefore it must be anticipated extraordinarily as well," he said.
He said he believed there would be no competition between the police and KPK, adding "it is not that there is limitation of cases and so cases that are handled by KPK. will be tackled by the police." (*)
