"All these achievements should not make us complacent, as the challenges we face today and in future are not light," President Jokowi noted during a speech at the 2017 Annual Session of the Peoples Consultative Assembly here on Wednesday.
President Jokowi said Indonesia is still facing poverty, injustice, and global economic uncertainty.
"We are also still facing extremism, radicalism, and terrorism," the president noted.
However, the head of state said several challenges lie ahead, of which the most important one, which should be a common priority of all state institutions, is gaining public trust.
"The peoples trust is the soul and energy for the state institutions to perform their duties and functions," he emphasized.
In his speech, President Jokowi highlighted the efforts and achievements of several state institutions to date, for instance, the Constitutional Court, which until now, continues to work and strengthen its role as a guardian of the constitution.
"Until mid-2017, of the 55 cases received, all have been ruled by the Constitutional Court (MK), some of which include disputes over the results of regional head elections. The success of the Constitutional Court in giving a ruling in the cases has led the MK to win the Bawaslu Award 2017," he noted.
In line with its role as a guardian of democratic values, in 2017, the MK has managed to maintain the trust of the international community as the permanent secretariat of the Constitutional Court in Asia.
"We also laud the efforts of the Judicial Commission (KY) in advancing judicial accountability in the country. The KY has completed eight cases of advocacy of judges as well as monitored 89 trials on community reports. The KY has also facilitated the conduct of the Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct for 277 judges," he noted.
Meanwhile, for maintaining judicial dignity, the KY has recommended the imposition of sanctions on 33 judges, ranging from mild to severe.
At the end of his speech, President Jokowi invited all parties and state institutions to make the public as the focus of their efforts. He urged all parties to always be heedful of the peoples suffering. He called on all to join hands and work together to bring about social justice for all people of Indonesia.
"Finally, with the spirit of Indonesian unity, I am certain that we will be able to carry out our constitutional duties towards an independent and sovereign nation," the president affirmed.(*)
