Nusa Dua, Bali (ANTARA News) - Foreign Minister Retno L.P. Marsudi along with Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly visited the Indonesia-Malaysia border in Entikong, West Kalimantan, on Tuesday to review the services and protection offered to Indonesian citizens.

Foreign ministry`s spokesperson Arrmanatha Nasir stated in a message received by ANTARA on Tuesday that the visit aims to improve the protection for Indonesian migrant workers who plan to travel to Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam through Entikong.

"The government must ensure that Indonesians are migrating safely through the border," he noted.

According to the foreign ministry`s records, some 155 thousand Indonesians work in Sarawak, Malaysia, of which at least 20 thousand are undocumented. Around two thousand undocumented Indonesian workers are deported through Entikong every year, Nasir added.

During their visit, Marsudi and Laoly called on the border authorities to strengthen efforts to prevent non-procedural and human trafficking of workers to Malaysia and Brunei via the Entikong-Tebedu border as well as to monitor the preparations for setting up an integrated service unit in the area.

Marsudi expressed hope that the government would be able to provide easy and swift services to the workers to reduce the number of undocumented Indonesians working abroad.

In addition to providing services and protection to migrant workers, the government is conducting job training for undocumented Indonesians deported from Malaysia. Minister Marsudi specifically advised these workers to utilize their new expertise to work in the country and not become migrant workers without official documents.
