The epicenter of the earthquake which struck at 11.47 p.m. was located 8.00 degrees southern latitude and 108.038 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 68 kilometers, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
The earthquake, which lasted for nearly one minute came after a 4.5-magnitude earthquake which was located 7.29 degrees southern latitude and 106.69 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 50 kilometers hit the district at 11.04 p.m. local time.
According to the BMKG, the earthquake occurred almost at the same time as a 7.3-magnitude earthquake that rattled the southern parts of Java island including Garut, Central Java and Yogyakarta.
There was no immediate report from the Sukabumi district and municipal natural disaster mitigation boards about the damage caused by the earthquake which had the potential to trigger a tsunami.
"When the (first) earthquake occurred I was watching television. I felt the earthquake but it was not strong. Only then I felt a stronger earthquake which lasted longer," Dina Nurlela, a resident of Benteng Kidul village, Warudoyong sub-district, Sukabumi city, said on Saturday.
