Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has urged the Indonesian National Military (TNI) and Police (Polri) to remain neutral during the 2018 regional head elections and the 2019 general elections.

The head of state delivered the message at the opening of the 2018 TNI-Polri Leadership meeting held at the Gatot Subroto Building, TNI Headquarters, Cilangkap, East Jakarta, on Tuesday.

On the occasion, he appealed to the TNI and Polri, from the top ranks to the grassroots level, to maintain unity, so they can synergize optimally in securing the elections.

Jokowi also lauded the process of implementation of the regional head and general elections in the previous years. He expressed hope that the elections in 2018 and 2019 would run smoothly.

"We should be proud that Indonesia as a nation has successfully held some elections, including legislative, presidential, and regional head elections, in a democratic, peaceful, safe, and orderly manner. It means that our society has become increasingly mature in taking part in democracy and politics," he emphasized.

The meeting was themed "Based on Synergy, Solidity, and Professionalism, TNI-Polri Secure the 2018 Simultaneous Regional Head Elections and 2019 General Elections Stages in Order to Ensure National Development."

The president also expressed gratitude for the preparedness of the TNI and Polri in securing the series of electoral stages.

"The Polri and TNI have done a good job in securing every democratic event. Hence, I would like to praise the work of the TNI and Polri," he remarked.

Jokowi also urged the TNI and Polri to map potential conflicts in several regions that will hold the regional head elections in 2018 as a precautionary measure against any potential conflict.

"Map the potential conflicts in 171 areas. Find areas that are roughly prone to conflict, then map their vulnerability," he emphasized.

In addition to Jokowi, several high-ranking officials, including Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Police Chief General Tito Karnavian, and Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto, were scheduled to elaborate on matters to participants at the meeting.

The meeting discussed the evaluation of the performances of the TNI and Polri in 2017 and the targets of the two state institutions for 2018.

In addition, a memorandum of understanding will be inked between the TNI and Polri during the meeting, but it cannot be reported by the press.

The meeting, scheduled on Jan 23-25, is being attended by 359 high-ranking officers comprising 180 high-ranking TNI officers and 179 senior officers of the Polri.
