New Delhi (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has stated that strengthening maritime cooperation is important to build the architecture of the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean (Indo-Pacific).

The visiting Indonesian president made the remarks during his Retreat session speech at the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit here on Thursday.

Jokowi attended the 2018 ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit, which was being held at the Taj Diplomatic Enclave on Jan 25 and 26.

"The attribution we do in the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean is aimed at creating a relationship or cooperation in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean," Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi quoted the president as saying at the Retreat session speech.

According to the head of state, India and ASEAN, in their effort to develop the maritime cooperation, can make use of the maritime forums, such as Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA).

In the meantime, Marsudi explained that Indonesia has also proposed a blueprint for ASEAN Connectivity up to 2025 and the maritime security and safety mechanisms through the use of hotline channels.

Marsudi further noted that Indonesia has been encouraged to connect with the ASEAN partner countries, including India, to expand cooperation in the maritime industry.

"What we want to expand in the ASEAN context is that ASEAN-India had agreed to hold dialogue on `mechanism over maritime domain.` There will be a discussion on special cooperation related to the maritime industry. It was the result of the agreement that ASEAN and India agreed on holding regular consultations to discuss maritime-related issues," she disclosed.

The president said that the 50-year-old ASEAN has managed to build a peaceful and stable ecosystem of the region.

He further expressed hope that the ASEAN-India dialogue, which has been running for 25 years, would be able to develop stability and peace not only in Southeast Asia but also in the wider region of the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean, or Indo-Pacific.

ASEAN consists of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, The Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.
