"We highly laud the activities carried out by the IOM to protect migrant workers in Indonesia. The issue of migration has become the center of global attention and has seriously been raised at meetings of world leaders," Manpower Minister M Hanif Dhakiri stated, after witnessing the signing of a cooperation agreement at the ministry here, on Monday.
The cooperation agreement was signed by Director General for the Development of Labor Force and Expansion of Job Opportunities, Maruli A Hasoloan, and chief of the IOM representative for Indonesia, Mark Getchell, in the presence of IOM Director General, William Lacy Swing.
IOM is an international organization for migrant workers, which is under the aegis of the United Nations. In Indonesia, IOM has been focusing on handling the issue of human trafficking, particularly in the six districts of Belu, Sika, Manggarai, Ende, Kupang, and Timor Tengan Utara in East Nusa Tenggara province.
Since 2005, IOM has assisted more than eight thousand people who have fallen prey to human trafficking crimes by providing them with shelters, legal aid, education, and economic empowerment.
