The epicenter of the quake which struck at 20.34 West Indonesia Standard Time (WIB) was located in the sea about 79 km northeast of Buru Island at a depth of 10 km, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
The agency said the quake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
The tremor was felt by people in Namlea, capital of Buru district at III-IV MMI and in Kairatu, Seram Island at II-III MMI.
The BMKG asked local residents not to panic or to be easily influenced by misleading report such as on tsunami.
