Pangkalpinang, Bangka Beligtung (ANTARA News) - State-owned tin mining firm PT Timah is looking to produce 2 million tonnes of tin by 2021 to remain the world`s second largest tin ore producer.

"We continue to find new tin deposits to achieve the production target," PT Timah Business and Commercial Development Director, Trenggono Sutioso told a focus group Friday.

The company`s tin ingot production reached 31 thousand tonnes in 2017, with 60 percent of it derived from offshore mining, he said.

"Nearly 60 percent of the tin production came from offshore mining, meaning marine tin ore deposits play an important role in contributing to PT Timah`s production," he said.

However, the company will find it difficult to achieve the production target of 2 million tonnes as current tin deposits are projected to yield just 300 thousand tonnes in 10 years.

"We expect to find new deposits so we can achieve the target of 2 million tonnes in 2021," he stated.

PT Timah will focus on optimising offshore mining, he said.

"We hope the target can be achieved so PT Timah can maintain its status as the world`s second largest tin producer," he said.
