Bandung, W Java (ANTARA News) - A 3-kilogram gas cylinder exploded at a rented house in the West Java city of Bandung early Wednesday, injuring a total of 14 people, police said.

The explosion occurred at around 00.20 WIB (West Indonesia Standard Time) when Acu, one of its occupants returned home from selling sekoteng (ginger-flavored drink), chief of the Kiaracondong police precinct in Bandung city, Commissioner Edwin Devianto said on Wednesday.

"Shortly after he put his merchandise in order, he smelt gas odor," he said.

Edwin said Acu further looked for the source of gas odor which came from a gas cylinder on his cart. He dipped the gas cylinder in the water and the gas cylinder exploded in a few minutes.

"As many as 14 people were injured due to the gas cylinder explosion," Edwin said.

The gas explosion also destroyed several parts of the rented house, he said.

All the victims of the gas cylinder explosion have been taken to nearby hospitals for intensive treatment, he said.

"The 14 occupants of the rented house are sustaining burn wounds. Five of them have been taken to Pindad Hospital, while nine others have been referred to Al Islam Hospital in Bandung city," he said.
