Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The South Jakarta court has sentenced eight Taiwanese to death for smuggling one ton of methamphetamine to Anyer Beach in Serang, Banten Province.

"The defendants have nothing to relieve the verdict," Presiding Judge Effendy Mukhtar said at the court here on Thursday.

Effendy led the trial for three defendants, namely Liao Guan Yu, Chen Wei Cyuan, and Hsu Yung Li, who played their roles to pick up the drugs in Anyer Beach.

In a separate trial, presiding judge Haruno Patriyadi sentenced to death five other defendants, namely Juang Jin Sheng, Sun Kuo Tai, Sun Chih Feng, Kuo Chun Yuan, and Tsai Chih Hung.

The five defendants were crew members of Wanderlust ship that carried 52 sacks of meth, weighing one ton, to Anyer Beach.

"The defendants Juang Jin Sheng, Sun Kuo Tai, Sun Chih Feng, Kuo Chun Yuan, and Tsai Chih Hung were declared guilty of malicious conspiracy for delivering more than 5 gram of narcotics and were sentenced to death. The defendants would remain in jail," Haruno remarked.

In July 2017, the Jakarta and Depok police shot to death a Taiwanese drug kingpin named Lin Ming Hui for smuggling the meth and arrested three other suspects, Chen Wei Cyuan, Liao Guan Yu, and Hsu Yung Li, at the jetty of Mandalika Anyer Hotel in Serang.

According to the suspects, the meth was delivered via sea route aboard Wanderlust ship, which had been seized by customs personnel in Tanjung Berakit waters in Bintan district, Riau Islands, on July 15.

The authority has also arrested five crew members, namely Tsai Chih Hung, Sun Chih-Feng, Kuo Chun Yuan, Kuo Chun Hsiung, and Juang Jin Sheng.
