"International law enforcement is important to protect the weak from the abuse of those who feel strong," Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno L. P. Marsudi noted in a statement on Friday.
The statement was made when Marsudi attended the UNSC open debate in New York on Thursday themed "Upholding International Law Within the Context of the Maintenance of International Peace and Security."
In front of 15 UNSC members, Marsudi emphasized the need for the council to fulfill its mandate in realizing international peace and security by being part of the solution and not part of the problem itself.
The minister also highlighted the importance of the UNSC members upholding the international law by implementing various UN resolutions, so the work and products of the UNSC can be beneficial to the global community.
"It is the responsibility of the UNSC to work in accordance with the international law to fulfill all commitments and resolutions. Hence, what is happening currently, for instance, where several resolutions on Palestine are not implemented, can be avoided," Marsudi stated.
The minister also conveyed the importance of the regulation and the architecture of the region as a "building block" for achieving global peace and stability.
The open debate was organized under the Polish presidency of the UN Security Council and chaired by the President of Poland. As many as 12 ministerial-level officials and 74 UN member states participated in the debate.
The theme of the open debate was based on the increasing number of violations of international law that will only lead to conflicts and crises.
Hence, the meeting is expected to remind members of the United Nations to continue to fulfill its obligations by upholding the international law and the UN Charter.
