Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen stressed that Indonesia has been Cambodia`s close friend since old times and will continue to do so in the present and future.

Hence, Hun Sen expects Indonesia to continue to support the Cambodian government`s policies to maintain stability, peace, security, and economic growth.

"Indonesia has also contributed significantly to the Cambodian peace process, especially at the Jakarta Informal Meeting (JIM) I meeting in 1988 and JIM II in 1989, which agreed on the outcome of the Paris Conference to create peace in Cambodia," Hun Sen noted while receiving a courtesy visit of Indonesian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia Sudirman Haseng at the Peace Palace, Phonm Penh, on Friday.

According to the release from the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh received by ANTARA on Saturday, Hun Sen also emphasized that Indonesia has a major role by sending a peace mission that is highly accepted by Cambodian society.

For now and in future, Hun Sen also expressed hope that the Indonesian ambassador along with the Cambodian government will constantly seek new breakthroughs to enhance cooperation between the two countries, especially in trade, investment, training, and tourism.

On the occasion, Ambassador Haseng extended greetings on behalf of President Joko Widodo to Prime Minister Hun Sen and expressed his gratitude for his willingness to attend the ASEAN Leaders Gathering on the sidelines of the IMF-WB Annual Meeting in October 2018 in Bali.

The ambassador also lauded Cambodia`s support to Indonesia due to which it was elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2019-2020 period.

Utmost efforts in improving bilateral relations in all sectors of cooperation and a joint activity plan to celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between both nations in 2019 was also highlighted by Ambassador Haseng at the honorary visit.

In response to the planned activities, Hun Sen was optimistic of immediately discussing various activities related to the celebration and the historic close relations between Indonesia and Cambodia that have been fostered since the era of President Sukarno and King Norodom Sihanouk.

Cambodia is currently one of the most promising countries to establish cooperation, particularly in the economic field.

Cambodia`s economic growth in the last two decades has been in the range of six to seven percent, which has led the nation to emerge out of the category of lower income countries by 2016.

The value of trade between Indonesia and Cambodia in 2017 had reached US$542 million, or increased by 20 percent of that recorded in 2016.

In addition to expecting a new breakthrough by intensifying cooperation, especially in the investment and tourism sectors, Hun Sen expects to start more direct flights from Indonesia to Cambodia, which can enhance economic cooperation between both countries in future.
