Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice Chairman of the Inter Parliamentary Cooperation Board of the Indonesian House of Representatives Rofi Munawar has called on oil producing countries to develop new and renewable energy that is environment-friendly.

Munawar made the call here on Thursday at the Commission on Economy and Sustainable Development Goals Forum of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly being held in Pissouri Bay, Cyprus, on June 27-28, 2018.

Munawar, also a member of the House`s Commission VII, highlighted the impact of dependence on fossil-based energy, so oil producing countries should realize the importance of new and environment-friendly energy and urged them to immediately make a new energy- and environment-friendly policy.

Munawar also cautioned that focusing on environmental issues should not pose a hindrance to global cooperation in trade and economy, as economic growth, especially in developing countries, is important, so all nations in the world should maintain mutual understanding on those issues.

Likewise, Munawar has called on APA members to reaffirm the global commitment to suppressing temperature rise under two degrees Celsius and warned them of the dangers of pulling out unilaterally from the Paris Treaty as was done by US President Donald Trump`s government.

Munawar is chairman of the Indonesian House delegation that also include legislators Venna Melinda and Siti Masrifah at the forum.
