"This partnership is aimed at improving the analytical capacities (of BMKG and NOAA), mainly in terms of processing the data-based algorithm. We hope this collaboration will produce more accurate and quick predictions (on climate)," the BMKG Chairwoman, Dwikorita Karnawati, said here on Thursday.
The agency, she noted, has been able to issue climate predictions for six months, and the information has been used by the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) to draft policies for farmers and fishermen.
Hence, besides climate predictions, the Indonesian and US agencies will increase observations and researches in Indian Ocean, as well as exchange the latest tools and technology.
"Before this partnership, the agency (BMKG) relied on information only on radars and satellites. However, with the latest technology, such as big data and artificial intelligence (that have been utilized by NOAA), we could launch a more accurate prediction on climate," she emphasized.
Besides the partnership, the two agencies have collaborated since 2006, mainly in terms of enhancing the capacity of the researches. In 2018, BMKG and NOAA also organized the 13th Annual Indonesia-US Ocean and Climate Observation, Analysis, and Applications Partnership Workshop.
In May, the two agencies also launched a joint maritime expedition under the 4th Indonesia Program Initiative on Maritime observation and Analysis (PRIMA) 2018.
During the three-week expedition, researchers had observed five spots in the Indian Ocean, including the western waters of West Sumatra and Benggala Bay. The expedition started in Cirebon, West Java, and ended in Sibolga Port, North Sumatra.
On the expedition, the researchers had collected information on marine meteorology, atmosphere, oceanography, as well as marine-geophysics, BMKG stated in its official website.
