"A total of 37 victims were successfully rescued, while six tourists died," Sukabumi District Balawista Daily Chief Yanyan Nuryanto stated here on Saturday.
According to Nuryanto, the high number of marine accidents during the Eid al-Fitr holidays was due to several factors, such as an increase in the number of tourists, which is disproportionate in comparison with the number of officers. Moreover, visitors fail to comply with the rules, and some of them swim up to the middle of the sea.
Most tourists, who drowned along the coastline of Sukabumi District, from Ujung Genteng Beach, Ciracap Sub-district, to Cibangban Beach, Cisolok Sub-district, were tourists from outside Sukabumi District.
Victims of marine accidents are mostly children and teenagers. Officers and volunteers tasked with handling visitors are quite overwhelmed by a surge in the number of tourists.
In fact, the managers of tourist attractions have put up bulletin boards, flag signs, banners, and loudspeakers to prevent accidents, but most tourists ignored it.
Nuryanto remarked that this weekend, his side remains on full alert, as it is the end of the Lebaran holidays, especially for students, due to which the number of tourists is quite high.
In a bid to take precautionary measures against sea accidents, Nuryanto said his side has stepped up supervision and urged tourists to not swim in accident-prone locations.
