United Nations (Antara/Xinhua-OANA) - The UN Security Council on Thursday condemned the Aug. 4 attack against UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon and called for an investigation into it.

In the attack near the town of Majdal Zun, the peacekeepers were threatened with illegal weapons. Vehicles were set on fire, and the peacekeeping force`s own weapons and equipment were seized.

In a press statement, the council members underlined the need for the conduct of a credible investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the attack.

The members also recalled the necessity for all parties to ensure that the personnel of the peacekeeping force, or UNIFIL, are secure and their freedom of movement is fully respected and unimpeded.

The members also commended UNIFIL`s cooperation with the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) with the aim of extending the control of the Lebanese government over all Lebanese territory, recalling the LAF are the only legitimate armed forces of Lebanon.

They stressed there should be no weapons or authority in Lebanon other than those of the Lebanese state, no foreign forces in Lebanon without the consent of its government, and no sale or supply of arms-related materiel to Lebanon except as authorised by its government.
