Palembang, S Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Indonesia grabbed the gold medal in the mixed double category, through its players Aldila Sutjiadi/Christopher, in the 18th Asian Games 2018 tennis event here on Saturday.

The gold medal was clinched by the Indonesian mixed double after beating their Thai rivals Luksika Kumkhum/Sonchat Ratiwatana in three matches, with a score of 6-4, 5-7, [10-7].

Indonesia had initially only set a target to win one bronze medal.

It was reported last week (Aug 17) that the Indonesian tennis team had stated that they had prepared well during training, in order to compete at the 2018 Asian Games.

"We are much better than we were when we first practiced in Jakarta last week," Indonesian male tennis player Christopher Rungkat remarked in a text message from PP Pelti Public Relations received on Friday (Aug 17).

Although the Indonesian tennis team is more prepared, they admit that they still have shortcomings and need adjustments, especially because the structure of the Jakabaring field in Palembang is different from their training ground in Jakarta.

"We need a little adjustment because the structure of the field in Jakabaring is different," national tennis player Aldila Sutjiadi noted.

Indonesia will put forth its strong players for the 2018 Asian Games, consisting of M. Rifqi Fitriadi and Anthony Susanto (men`s singles); and Aldila Sutjiadi and Beatrice Gumulya (women`s singles).

This will be followed by Justin Barki/Christopher Rungkat and Anthony Susanto/David Agung Susanto (men`s doubles); Beatrice Gumulya/Jessy Rompies and Deria Nur Haliza/Joleta Budiman (women`s doubles); and Aldila Sutjiadi/Christopher Rungkat and Jessy Rompies/David Agung Susanto (mixed doubles).

Meanwhile, a number of excellent tennis players have tried the Jakabaring Sport City Palembang tennis court. Among them are Denis Istomin (Uzbekistan), who will be the top seed of the men`s singles; Zhang Shuai (China), "top seeded" women`s singles; and the Chan duet from Taiwan, Chan Yung Jan and Chan Hao Ching, who are the top women`s doubles.
