The deflation of 0.05 percent in August 2018 brought the year-to-date inflation rate to 2.13 percent and the year-on-year inflation rate to 3.20 percent, BPS Chief Suhariyanto noted at a press conference here on Monday.
"The figure makes us happy, as it still stays below the target of 3.50 percent. In future, we hope the inflation rate would be controlled, so the target could be achieved," he remarked.
The deflation of 0.05 percent was chiefly contributed by a drop in the prices of chicken eggs, onion, and air tickets, he pointed out.
The BPS noted that the price of purebred chicken eggs fell 0.06 percent in 62 cities, the price of onion dropped 0.05 percent in 75 cities, and air tickets declined 0.03 percent.
However, education, recreation, and sports contributed an inflation of 1.03 percent in August 2018.
The agency noted that 52 out of the 82 cities surveyed for IHK recorded deflation, while 30 cities witnessed an inflation. The highest deflation was recorded in Bau-Bau, Southeast Sulawesi Province, at 2.49 percent, fueled by a decline in the price of fresh fish and air tickets.
The highest inflation of 0.62 percent was recorded in Tarakan, North Kalimantan Province, and the lowest inflation of 0.01 was recorded in Medan and Padangsidimpuan, North Sumatra.
The BPS chief further stated that the components of core prices in August 2018 recorded an inflation of 0.30 percent, indicating a index hike from 124.94 in July to 125.32 in August 2018. Meanwhile, the components of administered prices and volatile prices saw a deflation of 0.06 percent and 1.24 percent respectively.
