"The Indonesian government should be able to let go its dependence on fossil energy, which is the main problem of energy sovereignty," , stated at the launch of the #BersihkanIndonesia movement, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday.
The #BersihkanIndonesia movement invites all elements of Indonesian society to carry out four important things, namely fight against dependence on fossil energy, accelerate the development of renewable energy, improve energy and electricity governance that uphold the principles of accountability, transparency, and public participation, and carry out law enforcement and just transitions with a recovery perspective.
The four points also include demands raised that should be met by the presidential and vice presidential as well as legislative candidates who will compete in the 2019 General Election.
He remarked that the #BersihkanIndonesia Movement challenged all parties involved in the presidential and legislative elections in 2019 to discuss environmental issues and energy instead of only raising sensitive ethnic, religious, racial, and intergroup issues.
Johansyah explained that Indonesia still depends on coal and other fossil fuels in upstream to downstream energy.
He added that the use of coal burdened Indonesia with pollution and environmental damage, threatened food security, and posed health risks.
Coal mining concessions threaten a fifth portion of the productive land that should support Indonesia`s food security agenda. In addition, the health costs of the impact of Steam Power Plants sourced from coal reach around Rp351 trillion for each year of the plant operation.
Verena Puspawardani from Koaksi Indonesia revealed that Indonesia needed serious policy measures to stop the use of fossil energy and switch to the use of clean renewable energy by 2025.
"The government elected in 2019 will have to be consistent in making renewable energy the first and foremost choice in the electricity planning of this country," Puspawardani explained.
The #BersihkanIndonesia movement is a civil society movement and non-participant moral action that wants to invite all elements who will contest and participate in the presidential and legislative elections in 2019 to pay attention to, consider, and carry out the vision and mission which can protect the demands related to the future of Indonesian energy.
