Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Public broadcasting institutions in Indonesia are expected to serve the public with news contents that can positively affect the people at large, and support the country`s development, a senior lecturer of Telkom University`s Faculty of Electrical Engineering said.

Speaking at the Central Executive Board of the Association of Islamic Students` (PB-HMI) discussion forum here recently, Ahmad Tri Hanuranto said the country`s public broadcasting institutions, including TVRI, should, therefore, be empowered and strengthened.

"The broadcasting institutions play an important role in educating the public. When their contents are positive, they will also have positive impact on society," he said as revealed in the PB HMI`s press release made available to ANTARA on Tuesday.

By considering their mission-driven journalism, the important position of the public broadcasting institutions in advancing the nation and educating the public has been so obivous so that they should not be prioritized for earning profit or commercialization.

Meanwhile, Togar Pasaribu, executive director of the PB-HMI`s Islamic Student Institute of Technology`s Department of Research and Study who organized the discussion forum highlighting a theme of "Broadcasting Bill: Single-Mux, Multi-Mux, or Hybrid?", said the public broadcasting institutions` role seems to be more important nowadays.

He argued that several privately-owned mainstream media belong to figures, who get involved in real politics, amid the fact that the media need to remain neutral and impartial in their news reporting and presentation.

"The role of TVRI can be used as a public broadcasting institution for the government to neutralize the private media," he said at the discussion, moderated by Aidil Afdan Pananrang, director of PB-HMI`s Research and Study Department.
