Jakarta, (ANTARA News) - The new young adult movie, `Dear Nathan: Hello Salma,` highlights not only love but also depression among teenagers.

The movie, which is also the sequel to the `Dear Nathan` movie released in 2017, tells the love story of Nathan, played by Jefri Nichol, and Salma, played by Amanda Rawles, along with the presence of new characters that adds to the dynamics of their relationship.

The story also speaks about Salma`s struggle due to the pressure from her parents who have set certain goals for her higher education choices.

Nichol told Antara that the movie is bound to touch more young people as he is confident that they will find the story relating to what they experience in their lives.

"I think this movie will be more relatable. I have read somewhere that school students of the present day and age can suffer from the same level of depression as suffered by mental hospital patients back in the 1950s," he revealed.

Salma`s character, he continued, who is being forced to get into a prestigious university is also a common phenomenon among teenagers, especially those in his circle of friends.

He explained that there are a lot of his friends who are being directed to enter certain universities.

"There are a lot of my friends who spend all their time studying, even outside of school and with private tutors," he added.

Rawles, who plays the character Salma, agreed to what Nichol had stated in terms of the pressure being imposed on teenagers, especially those who are on the verge of graduating from high school.

"They often lose their way. For example, they will want to be a writer, but their parents would want them to be a doctor. They end up doing it but without putting their hearts into it," she explained.

"There is too much pressure and depression. I feel like a lot of teenagers go through what this movie is portraying, and it can be inspirational," she noted.

Issue revolving problematic families that take a toll on the children is also being highlighted in the movie through the character of Nathan, who often shows rebellious behavior at school due to the problems occurring at home.

A new character, Rebecca, played by Susan Sameh, has a similar behavior as Nathan before he met Salma. She was labeled as a rebellious and problematic teen.

"I think it is an issue that needs to be taken seriously," the 19-year-old actor stated.
