Surabaya, E Java, (ANTARA News) - Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, East Java, will build a special terminal for Umrah pilgrims at the eastern end of Terminal 1, to lessen congestion in the terminal.

General Manager of PT Angkasa Pura 1 Juanda, Yudi Maisa, said here on Wednesday that the cost of building the terminal was about Rp750 billion (US$49,355,902).

"The terminal will be built from February 2019 until the end of 2019 by adding four to five gates. Currently there are 12 gates," he noted, adding that Angkasa Pura will also build a special terminal at the west side of Terminal 1.

"In addition, we also plan to build a parking lot at the eastern side of the existing parking lot. The construction will be carried out in stages, with the first being built at the Umroh terminal," he said.

Yudi noted that this development was important because, at the time of the Umroh departures, there were many pilgrims and companions filling the main hall of Juanda?s terminal I.

"With the new facilities, it is expected that regular passengers and Umrah pilgrims can be separated to reduce the chaos," he said.

On the same occasion, the Director of Marketing and Services of PT Angkasa Pura I, Devy Suradji, stated that this development would have a consequence in changing the location of tenants who had been working within Juanda Airport.

"Of course we need to discuss the changes so that the partnership between the tenants and Angkasa Pura will be maintained," he said.

Devy pointed out that in 2017 the number of passengers at Juanda Airport was 20.1 million people. In 2018 the number of passengers is expected to increase to 21.2 million passengers, or grow by 5.5 percent.

"The 20 million passengers at Juanda Airport is a potential market for retail businesses. Therefore, we invite business and brand owners to become tenants at Juanda Airport and provide services to passengers," he said.

In addition to providing airport services that prioritize safety, security, service, and compliance (3S 1C), Angkasa Pura I is also concerned about the comfort of passengers.

"Convenience at the airport is a major factor in encouraging passengers and visitors to stay in airport terminals and spend their money at the airport," he said.
