Manado (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo replaced Din Syamsuddin as the President`s Special Envoy for Dialogue and Interfaith and Civilization Cooperation (UKP-DKAAP) following his resignation.

Based on written information received in Manado on Friday, Jokowi replaced Din with the Muhammadiyah figure Syafiq A Mughni.

The appointment of Syafiq was based on the Presidential Decree Number 52 / M of 2018.

As recorded, Din resigned from the UKP-DKAAP position as of September 21, while the active date of Syafiq as UKP-DKAAP began on October 16, 2018.

The resignation of Din was reportedly due to his remaining neutral during the political year. Moreover, the incumbent returned to run in the 2019 Presidential Election.

The Chairperson of the Advisory Council of the Indonesian Ulema Council also remains on the board of Muhammadiyah, which was one of the reasons for his resignation as UKP-DKAAP.

Currently, Din is the Chairperson of the Muhammadiyah Pondok Labu Branch Chair, Jakarta.

Meanwhile, after accepting his appointment as UKP-DKAAP, Syafiq was deactivated from his position as Chair of the Muhammadiyah Central Executive in the field of Interreligious Relations and Civilization.

President Jokowi appointed Syafiq to develop dialogues, as well as interfaith cooperation, both at home and abroad.

In addition, in the Presidential Decree it was explained that as a UKP-DKAAP, Syafiq had a mandate to promote the lives of Indonesian Muslims, based on the Wasathiyah principle.

Syafiq is a Professor of Islamic Civilization at Sunan Ampel UIN Surabaya. He also served as Chancellor of the Muhammadiyah University of Sidoarjo, and sat as Chair of the East Java Muhammadiyah Regional Chair.
