The total swamp area in Indonesia has reached 34 million hectares across the country, of which 10 million hectares are ready to be used as agriculture land, Sulaiman stated in a coordinative meeting in Palembang.
The ability to manage the swamp area as agriculture land would improve the country`s food resilience, the minister added.
In South Sumatra Province, the ministry would focus on swamp land in Banyuasin District.
"I want swamp land in South Sumatra to be managed maximally, so that the region can become the national food barn," he remarked.
Commitment from local leaders is also needed to support the success of the food sufficiency program, Sulaiman noted.
