Dumai, Riau (ANTARA News) - PT Pelabuhan Dumai Berseri (PDB) hopes to finish the construction of a new port for passenger ships in Dumai in 2019.

The port of Bandar Sri Junjungan, which will serve as domestic and international port is to be operational in February, 2019, Operational Director of PDB, which is owned by the Jambi city administration Syahroni Adrian said here on Monday.

Currently passenger ferries are served by the passenger terminal of PT Pelindi I in Dumai, Syahroni said.

PDB saw a business opportunity to contribute to the income of the city administration through the plan to build a new port for passenger ships, he said.

The plan to build a new port for passenger ships began since early 2018 in coordination with a number of related institutions such as the Transport Ministry and the Finance Ministry, he added.

The Bandar Sri port basin is quite deep suitable for ferry ships and roll-on/roll-off ships, therefore, there should be no much difficulty in the implementation of the plan, he said.

PDB, which will build the new port without capital participation of the city administration, already invited operators of passenger ferry vessels to discuss the plan to move passenger ship port, he said.

"Shipping companies have agreed and the port would be operated under profit sharing," he went on to say.

He said in addition to business in port operation, PT PDB plans to have eight business lines such as shipping, leasing of terminal warehouses.
