Jakarta, (ANTARA News) - Heavy rains, triggering flooding, are feared to hit a number of areas in Indonesia as masses of cold air are blowing into the country, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has said.

"A number of factors are expected to increase the potential of rainfall in large areas of Indonesia in the period ahead of the new year -- from 28 to 31 December, 2018," Deputy for Meteorology of the BMKG Mulyono R Prabowo said in a written statement received here on Friday.

Mulyono said center of low pressure in areas around the Philippines and South China Sea cause masses of cold air from mainland Asia to concentrate in northern region.

Meanwhile, domination of low pressure air in Australia is significant and causes the forming of area of slow wind blow and confluence of winds in southern part of Indonesia, he said.

He said a number of areas potential to be hit by heavy rains are Bengkulu, South Sumatran, Bangka Belitung and North Kalimantan.

Big pours are also expected in South Sulawesi, Central Java Yogyakarta, East Java , Bali, West and East Nusa Tenggara and southern Maluku.

A number of areas are also potential to experience the slapping of strong winds with a speed of 45 km/hour, such as Lampung, Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java , West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan ,East Nusa Tenggara, North Sulawesi,South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, North Maluku, southern Maluku and West Papua.

In addition, big sea waves as high as 2.5 - 4 meters are predicted to sweep across the water territory of the archipelago.

Heavy rains and flooding and landslides are already reported in various part of the country. Bridges collapsed and caved in because of rain triggered floods and land slides. A number of people were reported killed and missing swept by big floods and many houses collapsed and destroyed.
