Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Foreign Affairs Minister Retno L. P. Marsudi has called for reduction of plastic waste by using refillable bottles and reusable straws and bags.

"This is a cultural revolution that we are slowly starting. I am glad that our young colleagues in the Foreign Ministry welcome this practice," Marsudi stated here, Tuesday, Jan 8.

Reduction of plastic waste is crucial since plastic is non-degradable. Moreover, environmentally friendly practices can help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, she remarked.

The minister claimed to have managed to reduce the use of 10 single-use plastic bottles per day by having her own refillable bottle.

"Imagine if there are two thousand employees in the Foreign Ministry, how many plastic (bottles) have been reduced," she pointed out.

Marsudi said she had also reduced the use of disposable plastic straws and plastic bags and was instead using stainless steel straws and reusable bags.

The minister has encouraged reduction of single-use plastic not only in Jakarta`s office but also in Indonesia`s representative offices overseas.

"This is because we need to protect the environment not only in Indonesia but also the entire world," she noted.

The Indonesian government has set a target of reducing 70 percent of the plastic waste in the ocean by 2025.
