"There is nothing to pressure me to step down. This is the best decision for the nation."
Badung, Bali (ANTARA News) - North Sumatra Governor Edy Rahmayadi stressed that his decision to resign from the position of chairperson of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) is the best decision for the nation.

"There is nothing to pressure me to step down. This is the best decision for the nation," Edy said after delivering his resignation speech at the annual PSSI congress in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Sunday, Jan 20.

According to the former commander of the Army Strategic Reserve Command (Pangkostrad), leading PSSI became the most difficult challenge in his life.

He admitted that in some ways he failed to bring PSSI to be better since taking the lead in 2016.

"There are score-setting cases. There are fights too. That means I failed. Don`t let one or two persons to disturb PSSI. Let`s pray for the next leader to be more successful," Edy said.

Therefore, he also apologized to all Indonesian people, especially national football fans for his weaknesses in leading PSSI.

With the resignation of Edy, the association would be temporarily led by its Deputy General Chairman Joko Driyono.

Joko could lead the organization until the end of the current leadership period in 2020.

However, an extraordinary congress (KLB) could be held on majority members` demand to elect new chairman.

The congress would be held by the PSSI executive committee three months after the official request is received. However, if the committee failed to carry out its task, members could hold their own congress or ask for FIFA`s help.
