Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA News) - State-owned train manufacturer PT INKA (Persero) is producing 438 trains ordered by PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) to be operated in the country.

"Until now, 288 trains have been delivered," said PT INKA President Director Budi Noviantoro on the sidelines of train shipment to Bangladesh at the Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya on Sunday.

One of the products ordered by PT KAI is 31 LRT (Light Rail Transit) trainsets for Greater Jakarta (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok and Bekasi/Jabodebek).

LRT Jabodebek is one of the government`s strategic projects in order to provide convenience and speed of transportation to the community, with the value of the project contract reaching Rp3.9 trillion with a total of 31 circuits or 186 trains.

"Each trainset or series has six coaches which are planned to be sent in mid-2019," he said.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartarto has applauded PT INKA for its ability to produce high quality trains.

"This is a proof of good engineering and technological expertise," he said.

In the future, he said, the ministry will continue to encourage manufacturing-based exports which has better endurance and less affected by fluctuation of commodity price.

PT INKA has also manufactured trains ordered by the Philippines, comprised of six series of diesel trains (KRD), three locomotives, and 15 passenger trains with a contract value of 485 million pesos or around Rp127.3 billion.

The contract was obtained from the Philippine government in early 2018 through its railway agency the Philippine National Railways (PNR).
