Pontianak, W Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Alqadrie Center (YAC), Indonesian Conflict and Peace Study Network, in collaboration with the University of Bath, England, and West Kalimantan Provincial Government, held an international seminar covering topics on building peace in the 2019 Election.

Chair of YAC`s Founding and Advisory Board Prof. Dr Syarif Ibraham Alqadrie stated that the seminar was held to assist local governments in creating a peaceful environment during the 2019 Election.

"This seminar is one of our contributions to this region through a seminar attended by students and various parties to ensure that the 2019 election is peaceful and conducive, among others," Alqadrie explained.

"All parties need to collaborate to ensure the creation of a peaceful atmosphere and develop an understanding of preventing conflict and violence," he remarked here on Thursday.

Speakers at the seminar were Professor of the University of Bath, England, Dr Timo Kivamaki, Professor of Finland Dr Delsy Ronnie, and Professor of Social Sciences at the Tanjungpura University, Pontianak, Dr Alqadrie.

Students from the Pontianak Untan post-graduate program, Pontianak Untan strata, Pontianak Muhammadiyah University, Polnep, and IPDN West Kalimantan were part of the international seminar held at the Pontianak Polytechnic Campus.

Meanwhile, Kivamaki pointed to a current improvement in terms of conflict resolution and prevention in Indonesia, including in West Kalimantan. He noted that the pattern of conflict prevention had been handled carefully.

"I myself learned about peace that was built in West Kalimantan. In general, after the Second World War, the East Asia region was prone to conflict, and there must be good prevention," he explained.

He pointed to the potential of conflicts, among others, during the General Election. However, if there is no election, it will be far more difficult to manage the existing conflict.

"Various institutions must develop economic and political resolutions that must be good. The key can be to regulate and control the violence that exists," he noted.

The same seminar was also held in Singkawang City today that was attended by various parties from the Singkawang City Government and the existing Forkopimda as well as religious, community, traditional, and student leaders.
