AntaraSidoarjo (ANTARA) - Juanda Customs and Excise officers in East Java have succeeded in thwarting the smuggling of 160 grams of crystal methamphetamine or sabu-sabu from overseas, concealed in a drug mule's rectum and inside electronic speaker equipment to hoodwink the authority.
Juanda Customs and Excise Chief Budi Harjanto remarked on Monday that the first case of smuggling on Mar 1 was carried out by a Bangkalan resident, with the initials J, by concealing the drugs in the rectum.
"At that time, the offender was dropped off at Juanda's international arrival terminal from Malaysia. The officer then drew suspicious of the perpetrator's behavior. An 'x-ray' revealed something strange lodged in his anal hole. After examination, it turned out to be sabu-sabu drugs weighing160 grams," he remarked at Terminal 2 of the Juanda International Airport, Surabaya.
In the second incident, a Malaysian citizen, with the initials MF, got off the plane to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and headed to Juanda Surabaya on Mar 7.
"At that time, the offender got off with a speaker box. It turned out that after examination, the box contained a white crystal package, which was the drug sabu-sabu, weighing 1,070 grams," he revealed.
He confirmed that the passengers were thoroughly screened in connection with the sending of these prohibited items to prevent their entry into Indonesia.
"This is because in February, we had also conducted an inspection of goods in the form of Chatinone leaves, weighing 7,950 grams. These leaves are equivalent to cannabis leaves, originating from Africa," he remarked.
Efforts being made to disrupt the circulation of narcotics have saved the lives of around 4,590 youngsters. One gram of narcotics is reportedly consumed by two people.
"The suspect will be charged under article 113, paragraph (2) and article 102, letter e of Law Number 10 of 1995 on Customs and amended Law Number 17 of 2006 with the threat of a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison," he added.
