Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Fourth Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) adopted five resolutions initiated by Indonesia, respectively on sustainable production and consumption, sustainable peatland management, mangrove forest preservation, ocean protection, and sustainable coral reef management.

"Indonesia has initiated five out of the 23 resolutions adopted during the Fourth Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly," Laksmi Dhewanthi, expert staff of the Environmental Affairs and Forestry Ministry, in charge of international trade and industry, stated here, Thursday.

The Fourth Session of the UNEA was organized in Nairobi, Kenya, on March 4-15, 2019.

The 23-member delegation from Indonesia to the meeting was led by Soehardjono Sastromihardjo, Indonesia's ambassador to Kenya, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the UN-Habitat. Dhewanti was deputy head of the delegation.

Indonesia's delegation comprised officials of the Environmental Affairs and Forestry Ministry, the Coordinating Minister's Office for Maritime Affairs, Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Agriculture Ministry, Foreign Affairs Ministry, and the Indonesian Embassy in Nairobi.

The five resolutions will not only respond to environmental challenges but also create the environmental pillar that supports sustainable development.

Indonesia will promote international cooperation in peatland conservation and restoration.

The resolution on mangrove protection, tabled by Indonesia during the Session, was one of the efforts to curb the rate of mangrove degradation by promoting restoration through the application of sustainable management of mangroves.

The Indonesian government has been lauded for establishing the Regional Capacity Centre for Clean Seas (RC3S) in Bali and International Tropical Peatland Centre (ITPC) in Bogor.

The Fourth Session of UNEA is themed "Innovative Solutions for Environmental Challenges and Sustainable Consumption and Production." The UNEA is the world’s highest-level decision-making body on environment. It addresses the critical environmental challenges facing the world today. Understanding these challenges and preserving and rehabilitating our environment is at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Environment Assembly meets biennially to set priorities for global environmental policies and develop international environmental law. Through its resolutions and calls to action, the Assembly provides leadership and catalyses intergovernmental action on the environment.
