"Apindo must maintain a balanced relationship with their workers, businessmen and the government, because the government's interest is related to taxes,"
Batam, Riau Island (ANTARA) - Vice President M Jusuf Kalla has called on the Association of Indonesian Businessmen (Apindo) to maintain a balanced relationship with their employees and the government, as it is important for Indonesia's economic growth.

"Apindo must maintain a balanced relationship with their workers, businessmen and the government, because the government's interest is related to taxes," Kalla said in his opening remarks during a national working meeting of Apindo here, Tuesday.

Businessmen and employees have a mutually beneficial relationship, and the government acts as a mediator, particularly when workers ask for a salary hike, he added.

It is believed that cheap labor could contribute to a country's economic progress, while another view suggests that a hike in the salary of workers could help improve the purchasing power of the public.

"Therefore, the government has taken the middle path, noting that any salary hike must be in accordance with the economy. Hence, the government has issued a regulation (PP) No 73, which states that a rise in inflation must be followed by a real salary hike for workers," he said.

Besides, workers are entitled to a share proportional to that of the economic progress, he added.
