Palembang (ANTARA) - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi called on the need for continual improvements to the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system in Palembang, South Sumatra, to draw more number of passengers.

The recent assessment indicates the electric train's lengthy departure time that needs to be worked on, the minister noted after conducting an evaluation of the LRT here, Tuesday.

Furthermore, the electric train's mileage will be increased, particularly in tune with the users' requirements.

The minister confirmed the target to reduce the train's headways to below an hour.

Sumadi remarked that the electric train was yet in the trial phase for which ongoing evaluation was deemed necessary.

According to the minister, the LRT was built in Palembang, as South Sumatra had hosted the 2018 Asian Games.

Hence, this means of mass public transportation is yet a novel concept, for which evaluations must continue, he pointed out.

The ministry has ensured steady monitoring of the progress in the development of Palembang's LRT to ensure the best possible results.

Subsidy for tickets to use this public transportation is yet in the implementation process until it becomes operational.

Subsidy is usually offered to passengers using means of mass transportation, including Palembang's LRT, he pointed out.
