"I think members of the election committee are highly credible and have the capacity to select (candidates for KPK leadership)," President Jokowi stated at the Badung Market, Bali, on Saturday.
On May 17, 2019, President Jokowi had signed Presidential Decree of the Republic of Indonesia Number 54 / P of 2019 on Establishment of the Candidate for the Selection Committee of KPK Commissioners for the 2019-2023 term, chaired by Academic Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Trisakti University Yenti Ganarsih.
"We expect the selection committee, as the one in charge of selecting the right candidates for chairman and commissioners at the KPK. Leave it to the election committee," the president added.
However, the president pointed out that the House of Representatives (DPR) will finally decide on who would assume the KPK commissioner's position.
"However, later, in the final stage in the DPR, we only prepare the selection committee. The selected ones are expected to really be the best. I hope that I can submit names to the DPR at the earliest," the president stated.
Jokowi further admitted to having not urged the KPK committee chief to look for specific figures.
"There is no such thing (looking for a certain figure). However, the most important aspect is the pressure. I think it is the same in prevention as well in action," the president stated.
In accordance with Presidential Decree No. 54 / P of 1999 on Establishment of Candidates for the KPK Leaders in 2019-2023, Yeni Ganarsih was appointed chairman of the committee, while Professor of Criminal Law at the University of Indonesia, concurrently former acting head of the KPK, Indriyanto Senoadji, was appointed as deputy chief of the committee.
Members of the committee include Harkristuti Harkrisnowo, an academic, who is also an expert in criminal law and human rights (HAM); Hamdi Moeloek, academics and psychology expert at the University of Indonesia; and Marcus Priyo, an academic and criminal law expert at Gadjah Mada University.
Other members comprise Hendardi, founder of the NGO Setara Institute, and Al Araf, Director of Imparsial, while the two governmental elements are Diani Sadia, as expert staff at Bappenas, and Mualimin Abdi, the director general of Human Rights at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.
The KPK Committee Chancellor will work to select candidates for the KPK leadership for the 2019-2023 period since the Presidential Decree was stipulated. They will be responsible for sifting and suggesting names of candidates to the president and work until the KPK leaders are inaugurated for the 2019-2023 period.
KPK leaders -- Agus Rahardjo, Alexander Marwata, Alexander Marwata, Basaria Panjaitan, Saut Situmorang, and Laode Muhammad Syarif -- will end their terms in office on December 21, 2019.
