Bogor (ANTARA) - Presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto has tendered apologies for his absence at the funeral of former First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, wife of the sixth President of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY).

Ani, who would have turned 67 in July, died in Singapore on Saturday (June 1) following a four-month battle against blood cancer.

The funeral was held on Sunday (June 2) at the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery, where those in mourning comprised former and current government officials, who had arrived to offer their final respects to Ani Yudhoyono.

"I express an apology since (by that time) I was still en route from Europe to Indonesia," Subianto clarified after meeting former president SBY at his residence in Puri Cikeas, Bogor, Monday.

Subianto paid a visit to Cikeas to extend his condolences to SBY as his senior and close friend from the military.

Subianto revealed having recently undergone a checkup for an injury that recurred after he had campaigned for the 2019 Election.

"I apologize. I had time to visit her (Ani Yudhoyono) in Singapore, and I did intend to visit her again, as I heard that Mrs Ani's condition was improving, but it turned out that I was late," he stated.

Subianto views Ani as being a figure, who was the wife of a great soldier and extremely supportive of her husband, quite intelligent, and also immensely loyal.

Hence, Subianto felt it necessary to offer moral support to SBY, who had recently lost a very important person in his life.

He also stressed that the meeting with SBY was unrelated to politics.
