Manado, North Sulawesi (ANTARA) - The North Sulawesi Provincial Government exported 11.3 tons of nutmeg to Italy in early June, due to high demand from the country.

"We exported 11.3 tons of nutmeg to Italy. The exports contributed to the country's foreign exchange of US$56,250," Head of the North Sulawesi Industry and Trade Department Jenny Karouw stated in Manado on Thursday.

Karouw remarked that the nutmeg, known as Pala Siau from the Siau Islands, has been popular in European countries.

The demand for nutmeg and its derivative products from North Sulawesi is very high in Europe, the Americas and African markets.

"The demand is marked by rising orders of nutmeg and its derivative products from various countries in the world. The high demand indicates a good quality of nutmeg products from this province," Karouw remarked.

Therefore, Karouw encouraged local farmers to increase production and the quality of nutmeg.

Most nutmeg comes from districts in the Sitaro Islands, Sangihe and Talaud.
