Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chief of the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Dwikorita Karnawati was elected a member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) executive board, for the 2019-2023 term, at the 18th World Meteorology Congress held in Geneva from June 3 to 14. Karnawati is one of the 37 WMO Executive Board members elected at the congress and represents Southwest Pacific (RA V) along with Australia and Singapore, the BMKG said in a press statement released Friday.

With the election of Karnawati at the Congress, which brought together representatives from 149 countries, Indonesia has held the post for 12 consecutive years.

The Board will play a role in stipulating strategic policies and programs for the organization until 2023.

For safety and sustainability in the use and development of maritime operational services, meteorological, oceanographic, volcanic and tectonic data must be integrated into a reliable and accessible system, stated Karnawati. This system must be supported by a strong communication network which will not be paralyzed during an emergency, she added.

"For its part, we need to conduct observations with a digital, automatic and real-time standard using routinely-cared and calibrated equipment and certify data processors/ analysts/ forecasters/modeler to recond/ monitor the above multi-data," she said.

"Realizing the important and urgent need for standard and quality data with a reliable system, we need a partnership or cooperation with various parties in other countries or the private sector through a public-private engagement, which Indonesia is preparing for now," she said. (INE)
