Sumenep, East Java (ANTARA) -
The Arim Jaya ferry with 60 passengers aboard sank on Monday in Giliyang waters, Sumenep, Madura Island, East Java Province, as 17 people died and four remain missing.

Officials report that 39 passengers survived.

"Previously, five were missing, but one body was found earlier today, so only four remain missing," Sumenep Police spokesman Adjunct Commissioner Widiarti said here on Tuesday.

A joint team comprising personnel of the local search and rescue office (Basrnas), water police, military and the disaster mitigation office (BPBD) continue searching for the four missing passengers.

The Arim Jaya departed from Guwa Guwa Isle, Sumenep District, on Monday at 7 p.m. local time for Kalianget Seaport, also in Sumenep.

The boat was later struck by large waves and strong winds while sailing off Giliyang Isle, and sank.
