"The arrest was made on June 25. The police officers succeeded in securing a driver, who was suspected of being a TPPO, with the initials as NKN," The Singkawan police investigator Inspector Suprihatin said here on Friday.
During that time, the suspect had brought three passengers suspected of being victims of TPPO from Mayasofa, Singkawang Timur District. The TPPO were looking to go to China for marriage.
"However, before arriving at the destination country, the police received a tip-off from the public on the alleged TPPO, so the car was intercepted precisely in the Sakok area, South Singkawang District," he confirmed.
Currently, investigation is ongoing into developments in the case involving the suspect to tackle this problem at its roots.
Moreover, his side also confiscated evidence in the form of three cellular phones, a black KB 1658 PB car, a bundle copy of ID cars, family certificate and passport, a flight ticket for the Pontianak-Jakarta route on behalf of Sella, Asen, and A'on and Rp2 million in cash, of which only Rp1.2 million was left, as it had been used to meet the daily needs.
He is subject to Article 4 Jo Article 2 paragraph 1 and Article 10 of Law No. 21 of 2007 on the Elimination of Crime of Trafficking in Persons (TPPO) that carries a minimum sentence of three years and a maximum of 15 years in prison and a fine of at least Rp120 million and at most Rp600 million.
Singkawang Mayor Tjhai Chui Mie remarked that before marriage, it is better for women to equip themselves with education and the necessary skills to adapt themselves to lead a content and fruitful married life.
"With this readiness, I am certain that wherever we are, women are not easily intimidated by anyone," he noted.
He remarked that a woman must be independent and not have to seek any form of assistance from her husband. However, the most important aspect is that the residents of Singkawang do not get easily swayed by overtures, especially if there are people promising a better life.
"This is because we do not know what it is like in someone's country," he added.
