"The ASEAN must unite. This unity is able to make the ASEAN last for 52 years," Jokowi remarked during the inauguration of the new ASEAN building in Jakarta on Thursday.
ASEAN members will encounter varied challenges in future pertaining to the economy, politics, religious affairs, and ethnicity.
In the coming five decades, the ASEAN faces challenges in the form of tensions between major powers, among others.
The public will also continue to watch closely the role and benefits of the ASEAN in social life.
"Hence, the ASEAN must maintain its reputation. ASEAN should be relevant to the developments and interests of the people of ASEAN. The bloc must work faster in responding to changes. ASEAN must move quickly and solidly," Jokowi stressed.
President Jokowi earlier inaugurated the new building of the ASEAN Secretariat on Sisingamangaraja Street, Jakarta, on Thursday.
"Indonesia has endeavored to facilitate the ASEAN to work in a fast, solid, effective, and efficient manner. Based on that thought, we construct this building," Jokowi remarked in his inauguration speech at the main hall of the new ASEAN Secretariat building.
