The Mukomuko district administration will grant 16 square meters of land in Bantal area, Teramang Jaya Sub-district, to install the mechanism referred to as the Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning System (Ina-TEWS), Head of the Mukomuko District Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD) Syahrizal noted in a written statement released on Monday.
Ina-TEWS is a comprehensive tsunami early warning system equipped with a new technology known as Decision Support System (DSS). Indonesia had launched Ina-TEWS on November 11, 2008, with assistance from several donors, including Germany, Japan, and the United States. The system is designed to provide information through cell phones, television, and other channels.
"We have sent a letter of land grant from the local administration to the BMKG that will use the land to build it (the tsunami early warning system)," he stated.
He remarked that the BMKG had conducted a survey in the area to find a suitable location for the tsunami early warning system. Based on the survey results, the BMKG decided to build the facility in the area.
He expressed hope the device would be able to provide fast and accurate information on earthquake and tsunami to the local people.
Bengkulu is one of the Indonesian provinces prone to earthquake and tsunami.
