Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry has booked export transactions worth US$42.62 million at the Japan International Seafood and Technology Expo (JISTE), a 14.67 percent increase as against the transaction recorded in last year's exhibition. Indonesia's participation was aimed at increasing fishery exports to Japan and seeking new global markets, the ministry's Director of Marketing at the Directorate General of Fishery Products Competitiveness, Machmud said.

"Japan is the second largest trading partner for Indonesian fishery products after the United States, with trade valued at $676.58 million or 13.92 percent of Indonesia's total fishery export in 2018," Machmud said in a statement here Wednesday.

JISTE was held in Tokyo Big Sight, Koto, Japan from August 21 to 23, 2019.

Buyers were attracted to the giant tiger prawn, white shrimp, fresh and frozen tuna, octopus, surimi-based processed products, and unagi kabayaki, Machmud said.

In addition to Japan, other buyers came from the United States, China, Mexico, Taiwan and Oman.

Some 800 exhibitors from 20 countries were part of the exhibition that provided 1,400 booths. The expo was attended by retail industry, food services, wholesalers and distributors, and food processing industries in Japan.

The ministry had invited eight exporters to exhibit their products in an 84-square-meter Indonesian Pavilion.

Indonesia's total fishery exports in 2018 reached $4.86 billion of which the United States, Indonesia’s largest trading partner, conducted transactions worth $1.8 billion.

The country's main fishery products exported to Japan are shrimp ($334.94 million), tuna, skipjack and mackerel tuna ($133.26 million), and crabs ($36.47 million), cuttlefish, squid, and octopus ($17.9 million). (INE)
