Jakarta (ANTARA) - The mass transportation system for the new capital being planned in the districts of North Penajam Paser and Kutai Kartanegara of East Kalimantan province, will be electricity-based, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said. The development of an electricity-based Light Rail Transit (LRT) transportation system is adjusted to the concept of the new capital being free from pollution and environmentally-friendly as desired by the government, he said while attending the opening of Indotrans Expo 2019 at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) Friday.

"We hope the new capital city, which will be located in East Kalimantan, will become a future city which applies an electricity-based transportation system," he said.

Three airports will connect the new capital to the rest of the country, he said and added that the Aji Pangeran Tumenggung (APT) Pranoto Airport and the Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan airport are currently connected to the location where the new capital will come up.

"We will only connect Samarinda to Balikpapan utilizing the LRT and the new capital will be located between the two cities," he said.

The government has decided to move the national capital from Jakarta to East Kalimantan province. The relocation will cost an estimated Rp466 trillion.

The figure excludes the government's operational cost during the development period and the transition period, according to the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas).

Nearly Rp253.4 trillion or 54.4 percent of the total funding needed to move the capital will come from a joint venture between the government and corporate bodies, Rp123.2 trillion or 26.4 percent from the private sector and Rp89.4 trillion or 19.2 percent from the state budget.

The government expected the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the new capital to be conducted in stages in 2021 while the relocation will begin in 2024. (INE)
