For the second and next phase of construction, our MRT lines will be designed for trains powered by clean and renewable energy
Jakarta (ANTARA) - City-owned MRT Jakarta plans to power its trains with renewable energy to reduce the carbon emission that leads to global warming, the President Director, William Sabandar stated at Lebak Bulus Grab MRT Station, here, Friday.

"For the second and next phase of construction, our MRT lines will be designed for trains powered by clean and renewable energy," Sabandar remarked. Most carbon or greenhouse gases were emitted from public transport services, therefore, the future MRT trains would utilize some clean energies such as solar, water, or wind power, he explained.

"Our existing MRT trains are powered by coal-based electricity," Sabandar noted.

Therefore, MRT Jakarta has now launched research and is studying documents on utilizing renewable energy for trains.

"We are now reviewing a lot of initiatives on reducing carbon emissions, and we will study further to determine clean energy that fits into our operations," he added.

MRT Jakarta started its second phase of construction on March 24, 2019. At least seven MRT stations will be built from Sarinah, Central Jakarta to Kota, West Jakarta.

This phase would connect MRT lines in southern and central Jakarta to the province's western and northern region.
